In the Netherlands, this would be illegal too, since the butterfly would physically suffer from the molestation. If it can not be proven the animal (or plant, or fungus – whatever floats your boat) has suffered do to you molesting them, you have not committed a crime.
So a butterfly – that’s illegal.
A dog – that’s legal.
In fact, several years ago, there was a man arrested and released for molesting the same donkey OVER 40 TIMES. Beat that South Carolina!

The worst part is it’s true, I heard something like that in 4th grade (don’t ask me how it came up in class).
